'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Release Date News, Spoilers: HBO Reveals Premiere Date, Trailer; 'Great War' Is Here

After months of waiting, HBO finally revealed the premiere date of "Game of Thrones" season 7 alongside a cryptic trailer that clearly sends a message about the looming Great War.

Fans were both delighted and saddened with the announcement of the season 7 premiere because while they now know exactly how long they should sit tight, however, it also means there is still a long wait ahead. "Game of Thrones" season 7 arrives on Sunday, July 16.

The trailer features black structures of the Houses' sigils with lines from the main characters. It opens with a mighty black stone-like statue of the three-headed dragon that represents House Targaryen while the voice of Queen Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) can be heard saying: "I know what my father was, what he did. I know the Mad King earned his name."

Her words are followed by another Queen, the one who currently resides in Westeros, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), declaring, "Everyone who isn't us is an enemy."

For those who are not yet caught up with the latest happenings in the world of "Game of Thrones," the previous season ended with the looming war between Cersei and Daenerys. In season 6, the latter was able to consolidate the Houses with big armies (and a big hate for Cersei) plus the fearless Dothraki warriors and Unsullied soldiers. With them, Daenerys is on her way to King's Landing to reclaim the Iron Throne which was just recently handed over to Cersei.

On the northern side of Westeros, the North Houses have once again united under the leadership of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the only living son of the late Eddard "Ned" Stark (Sean Bean). However, the people in Westeros, including Jon, is about to find out that he is actually the son of Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi) and Rhaegar Targaryen.

On the other hand, while the House leaders and royals are busy trying to claim the Iron Throne, Jon is concerned about another matter - something bigger. He knows that a Great War is coming. In the trailer, Jon can be heard saying: "There's only one war that matters – the Great War. And it is here."

It is expected that season 7 will feature the moment when the franchise's version of zombies called the White Walkers – led by the Night King – will finally break the colossal barrier called The Wall to unleash havoc on men.

The main teaser poster for season 7 literally exudes the battle between ice and fire.

"Game of Thrones" is based on George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series. Now that Jon is a confirmed Stark and a Targaryen, fans are starting to pick up more puzzle pieces on what the combination of "Ice and Fire" really means for the franchise.
