Garrett Hedlund believes 'Tron 3' isn't dead yet
It's been about five years already since "Tron: Legacy" hit theaters and until now, fans of the science fiction film are still waiting for its threequel. Unfortunately, it was reported back in May that Walt Disney Pictures has arrived at a decision to "pull the plug" on the third "Tron" movie. Flickering Myth revealed that it has been taken off the upcoming film roster despite the fact that director Joseph Kosinki and stars Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde agreed to reprise their roles.
This news has inexorably made lots of fans disappointed especially since they thought that the film will push through as it had been once confirmed and a production date had even been announced. And now, it's considered dead with very little explanation why. But as for Hedlund, the one who played the main character Sam, it's just not over yet. Slash Film reported that the "Friday Night Lights" actor isn't grieving for the death of the franchise, primarily because he refuses to believe that it's now dead.
He spoke his thoughts about "Tron" in an interview with ComicBook.com during the "Pan" press junket in New York. He said, "I haven't been told it's totally dead. Ever since we did Legacy, we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting."
Wilde, who played fearless warrior Quorra, had confirmed Tron's production. When it was put on hold, she explained that it was simply a matter of finding the best story for the third installment. Hedlund seems to approve what Wilde had previously stated. He agrees that the third movie needs to be a top-notch in terms of storyline in order not to turn out to be a flop.
Hedlund then adds with a laugh that maybe the third movie, which is occasionally called "Tron: Ascension," is going to be just like "Legacy" to the first "Tron," which was released in 1982. Perhaps the year gap of a follow-up will take as long as 30 years. Whenever it may happen, Hedlund assured that he will be more than willing to join back in.
