Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez News: 'GGG' not willing to go down in weight for Alvarez bout
Middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin is not willing to go down a pound less than 160 lbs, should he face former light middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Both fighters are currently at the top of their game, with "GGG" holding the WBA, IBO, and IBF titles. At 33 years of age, the Kazakh boxing sensation continues to uphold an immaculate win-loss slate: 34-0, with 31 victories by stoppage. He last fought David Lemieux three weeks ago, where he won by eighth round TKO.
Alvarez, on the other hand, is scheduled to face Miguel Cotto for the latter's WBC, lineal, and Ring Magazine middleweight titles. The fight will take place on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. He holds a record of 45-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout.
The possibility of a Golovkin vs. Alvarez bout has been repeatedly brought up in the past. In a mid-October report by Bad Left Hook, Golden Boy Promotions chief Oscar De La Hoya says he would "absolutely" make the fight happen, should Alvarez emerge victorious against Cotto.
According to another report by Miguel Rivera of Boxingscene.com, the World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered Golovkin to be the mandatory challenger for the winner between Cotto vs. Alvarez. "GGG" has always welcomed the idea, but under one condition: he is only willing to fight at 160 lbs, and not a pound less.
"There is no chance that [I will go to] 155-pounds for a fight Canelo, the division [limit] is 160 pounds, this is my [weight] class. I am a fighter, I do not come to do business," Golvokin said. I fight at middleweight or super middleweight. I don't come to fight at 156 or 158, that's just business."
Golovkin, however, made an exception for one fighter.
I think I would go to 154 just a fight for Floyd [Mayweather], he is the number one in the world, pound for pound, the best."
