George R.R. Martin Wants 'Bittersweet' Ending for 'Game of Thrones'
Fans of the action-fantasy series on HBO "Game of Thrones" are bracing for an epic Season 6. The series' Season 5 ended in June 2015 and the next season will not be out until 2016. Season 5 brought about major changes, with a lot of characters killed off. So the next season should be interesting in terms of who is left standing and what their fate will be as the season progresses. HBO has not specified a release date as of yet.
According to another report in Variety, series creator George R.R. Martin is already contemplating on what kind of ending he wants for the next season. This is in relation to his giving an ending to the novel series where "Game of Thrones" was based on. Martin is currently finishing the final installment of "A Song of Ice and Fire," which will essentially signal the end of the fantasy series as well. In the report, Martin said that he has to write the ending, but that it will not be as dark as it can be expected.
"That's certainly not my intent. I've said before that the tone of the ending that I'm going for is bittersweet," he told the New York Observer.

By "bittersweet," Martin further explained that he was looking at how J.R.R. Tolkien handled the ending of the "Lord of the Rings," which ended in victory albeit a bittersweet one since Frodo had to leave the Shire in order to find peace while the other characters go on with their lives.
"All I can say is that's the kind of tone I will be aiming for. Whether I achieve it or not, that will be up to people like … my readers to judge."
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss acknowledge the fact that no ending has been written yet, but they are confident that Martin has "a goal in mind."
"Even while we talk to him about the ending, it doesn't mean that that ending that he has currently conceived is going to be the ending when he eventually writes it," they explained.
