Georges St-Pierre News: 'GSP' Reveals Ongoing Talks with UFC
Former long-time welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre recently broached the idea about a UFC return.
'GSP' last saw action in November 2013 at UFC 167, where he emerged victorious against former champion Johny Hendricks via a controversial split decision victory. After which, he announced that he was taking an indefinite hiatus from the sport.
Since then, the UFC 170-pound title changed hands, twice. Hendricks won the vacant belt at UFC 171 in March 2014, via unanimous decision over Robbie Lawler. Lawler, however, was able to win the title in a rematch against Hendricks at UFC 181 in December of that year, via a split decision verdict.
"Ruthless" has already been able to defend the title a total of two times, with the most recent one in a barnburner against former interim champion Carlos Condit at UFC 195 last January.
For his part, St-Pierre has been on the fence over the past few years, as far as his comeback goes. Last December, UFC president Dana White said that St-Pierre was "done", and that a return would be out of the question.
St-Pierre's trainer Firas Zahabi, on the other hand, says he foresees a potential return for his fighter in 2016.
After all the talk, St-Pierre himself shed some light on whether or not he will be returning to the Octagon. In an interview with TSN on Tuesday, the Canadian fighter says he is currently in talks with the UFC, but did not disclose any furthe details.
"Everything is possible, but I don't know right now," St-Pierre said. "I can't tell you everything. I have to keep some secrets."
In another report by Bloody Elbow, St-Pierre says there are still "several things" that are factors for his return, noting how his "very old" contract has been running, way before the company inked their lucrative deal with apparel giant Reebok.
"We will see what will happen, but again, there are things I cannot say," he said. "It depends on the plans of my agents and the UFC, We will see what is best for us and for them."
