'Geostorm' Release Date, News: Official Trailer Shows Global Catastrophe of Epic Proportions

After many times that the apocalyptic meteorological disaster movie "Geostorm" has been pushed back a few times, finally it appears like it may more or less be ready to warn the world of what's coming. As a sign that it may have already secured its release date, a first look at the film is revealed, and it is nothing short of spectacular.

In the movie's official trailer, mankind is plagued by all kinds of seemingly unnatural environmental phenomena. From rogue tornadoes, widespread lightning storms, spontaneous eruptions from the ground, bus-sized chunks of hail falling from the sky, to the usual skyscraper-high tsunamis, every incident heralds the end of days.

According to the film's synopsis, "Geostorm" takes place at a time when natural disasters were destroying everything in its path, so world leaders had to work together to create satellites that will control the global climate. At first, it may have kept everyone safe, until the fateful day when things went haywire, triggering a series of events that made things even worse.

The teaser has been well made and showcased things people would expect and more from a disaster film. It has been even compared with other science fiction films like "Independence Day" and "Day After Tomorrow," which just goes to show it has captured the imagination and fancy of audiences.

For what it's worth, at least it looks like the delays were worth the wait. It can be recalled that the film had to undergo major rehashes under the watchful eye of "Judge Dredd" director Danny Cannon and had to use a whopping $15-million budget, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Judging from the result, it looks like it worked, although the pressure is on to earn back the large budget.

"Geostorm" is set to bring a world of chaos in theaters on Oct. 20, 2017.
