'Get Smurfy' News: Smurf Animated Movie in the Works, Demi Lovato and Rainn Wilson Join Cast
After two successful live-action movies featuring the little blue creatures called "the Smurfs," Sony Pictures is cooking up another Smurfs movie, this time a fully-animated one. The announcement was made to mark the 2015 Global Smurfs Day last Sunday.
The upcoming movie is titled "Get Smurfy" and according to a report in Variety, will feature a multi-talented voice cast which includes Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurk and Rainn Wilson as the evil wizard Gargamel.
Sony Pictures Animation is taking the lead in this film.
"We have gathered a group of filmmakers and artists who have grown up with these loveable characters, and 'Get Smurfy' will be imbued with the same spirit of adventure that first made all of us lifelong fans of these little blue guys," said Sony animation president Kristine Belson.
The film will reportedly follow the original animation style of the Smurfs' creator Peyo Culliford closely. Its story will follow Smurfette and her fellow Smurfs as they search for the Smurfs village in the Enchanted Forest. Considered an origin story of sorts, it will help answer some of the questions about the blue creatures including the one about why there is only one girl Smurf in the bunch and the rest (99 of them) are boys.
The film's director will be Kelly Asbury, who also directed "Shrek 2" and "Gnomeo & Juliet." Jordan Kerner and Mary Ellen Bauder are producing the film.
"The continued popularity of the Smurfs is unmistakable, and this new outing will return them to the fully animated world that launched them," Asbury said about the movie and the beloved blue creatures,
The two live-action films: "The Smurfs" in 2011 and "The Smurfs 2" in 2013 grossed more than $900 million dollars combined in worldwide sales. "The Smurfs" were comic characters created by Peyo or Pierre Culliford in 1958. An animated TV series was created based on these characters and was shown in 1981.
"Get Smurfy" is set to bow in theaters on March 31, 2017.
