"Ghost in the Shell" News, Update: Paramount Releases New Motion Posters Featuring Scarlett Johansson As Major and Her Task Force
Movie buffs have been talking about "Ghost in the Shell" since the release of its Super Bowl trailer early this month. This week, Paramount got more people buzzing about it when it released eight new motion posters for the upcoming live-action film.
The posters feature Scarlett Johansson as Major, together with the seven members of her Section 9 task force: Batou (Pilou Asbaek), Aramaki (Takeshi Kitano), Ishikawa (Lasarus Ratuere), Borma (Tawanda Manyimo), Saito (Yutaka Izumihara), Ladriya (Danusia Samal) and Togusa (China Han).
Based on the official synopsis for the film, "Ghost in the Shell" focuses on a special ops and one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid named Major, who leads the elite task force Section 9. While the task force is committed to stopping the most notorious criminals and extremists, they are confronted with an enemy whose only goal is to annihilate Hanka Robotics' advancements in cyber technology and wipe out the corporation once and for all.
Aside from Johansson, the cast of the upcoming adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga series also includes Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Beat Takeshi as Daisuke Aramaki, and Michael Pitt as Kuze.
On the week that its Super Bowl trailer was released, "Ghost in the Shell" generated around 30,000 new conversations on social media. This figure was higher than the 24,000 new conversations generated by Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Earlier this month, Paramount confirmed that a one-night-only fan event that will offer a first look at new footage from the upcoming film will screen exclusively in 14 IMAX theaters nationwide. The studio has yet to confirm when the event will happen.
Directed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders and written by Jamie Moss and Ehren Kruger, "Ghost in the Shell" hits U.S. theaters on Friday, March 31. Stay tuned for more updates on the live-action adaptation of the hit anime series "Ghost in the Shell."
