'Ghostbusters' Reboot News: All-Male Version Starring Channing Tatum to Expand Franchise
Sony intends to expand the "Ghostbusters" universe, so they have teamed up "Magic Mike" lead Channing Tatum with the "Captain America" directors to release an all-male "Ghostbusters" reboot.
With the announcement of an all-female "Ghostbusters" movie last January to star Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony has released the news it will be enlarging the ghost-fighting universe with a concurrent reboot featuring an all-male "Ghostbusters" quartet film led by "Jupiter Ascending" actor Channing Tatum.
To give moviegoers a third version of the iconic 1984 movie, Ivan Reitman, who directed the first film, will be teaming up with original Dr. Ray Stantz, Dan Akroyd, "Iron Man 3" writer Drew Pearce, and the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, who directed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" to recreate the supernatural comedy.
The all-male reboot has yet to publicize a release date, but is reportedly coming out shortly after the all-female version, which hits theaters July 2016.
Sony is reportedly forming a new production company, Ghostcorps, composed of Reitman and Akroyd, to formulate rebranding of the original classic film. According to Reitman, he and Akroyd have been discussing the all-male version since 1999, hinging on the original Dr. Peter Venkman, Bill Murray reading and approving the script. However, Sony has decided on relaunching the franchise beginning with Feig's all-female version instead.
"We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment," Reitman told Deadline.
Reitman says the all-male "Ghostbusters" will build on the comedy premise of its all-female predecessor, which he projects to expand into more future movies for the franchise.
