GM Adds 800 New Jobs at SUV Factory
General Motors Co has announced that it will be adding a third shift at its SUV factory in Texas, which will add 800 new jobs.
The added shift has been created to meet demand for larger vehicles while the automaker installs new tooling and equipment to build its future line of trucks and SUVs. The injection of jobs will also provide relief to present workers who have been forced to commit to "extensive" overtime since late 2009, Reuters has reported.
The Arlington Assembly is the location where GM builds its Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe, and currently employs about 2,500 workers.
GM has released a statement where Larry Zahner, manufacturing manager for GM North America, has said, "We see this segment stabilizing enough to add a third shift, reducing the cost and personal demand of overtime and providing us flexibility for possible increased demand as we introduce new trucks."
The new shift is not set to be implemented until early 2013, but new job creations will commence from towards the end of this year.
GM employs 202,000 people and does business in some 157 countries. General Motors produces cars and trucks in 31 countries, and sells and services these vehicles through the following divisions/brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden, as well as two joint ventures in China, Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile.
