'God of War' News: Sony Releases Gameplay Trailer Featuring Kratos and His Son
A new "God of War" trailer was released by Sony at Paris Games Week.
The trailer features the kind of father-and-son dynamic that players can expect from the game. It opens with Kratos, accompanied by his excitable son Atreus, in the Huldra Mine. Atreus points out to his father that there is a soul eater nearby. He reminds him that if they are killed by a soul eater, they will not be welcomed into Valhalla or any sort of afterlife.
However, Kratos tells his son that the soul eater does not attack. Atreus sighs in relief, recalling that his mother had told him scarier stories about soul eaters.
Kratos then proceeds to combat enemies with the support and help of his son. In addition to being a loving father, Kratos proves that he is also a force to be reckoned with. As they make their way out through the same gate the soul eater passed, they hear the singing of an unknown woman.
The fourth "God of War" game will take on Norse mythology after spending three games focused on the Greeks. However, that does not mean the action will be subpar. Creative director Cory Barlog previously told GameSpot in an interview earlier this year that maturity influenced the change in the type of action in the new "God of War" game.
"The maturity of its handling of mature subjects like violence, death, and loss — but we're handling it in a different way," Barlog said, explaining that going through life and becoming older greatly played a role in how they tackled action in the upcoming title.
He also clarified that the game is not open-world despite more freedom being given to players to explore their surroundings.
"It is a very wide, super wide, linear game in the sense that it follows a specific and straight story. But, we are really letting the player do their own thing and explore the space," he said. "If they see something in the distance, we'll let them go to it. To have that feeling of discovery is important in this game."
"God of War" will be released in early 2018.
