'God of War' PS4 News: Director Cory Barlog Reveals More About the Kratos-Atreus Dynamic

Players will be able to issue commands to Atreus in the game

Developers have already revealed plenty about how Kratos and his son Atreus will cooperate inside the new "God of War" PlayStation 4 game. But considering how foreign to the series this particular mechanic is, there are likely more than a few fans out there still looking for more details.

For those who still have some questions regarding the father and son pairing, director Cory Barlog recently shared some more details that may help clear things up a bit.

Speaking recently to The Hollywood Reporter, Barlog shared that the Kratos-Atreus pairing was not something to fear since it was "most definitely not an escort mission." For those who may be unaware, escort missions typically involve the player helping a non-playable character reach a specific area or finish a certain goal.

Most gamers would probably regard escort missions as more trouble than they are worth, so the idea that the upcoming "God of War" PS4 game could end up as one long version of that has caused some concern, but that is not expected to be the case.

Instead of an escort mission, Barlog likened the Kratos-Atreus relationship to one shared by a military leader teaching a soldier.

Barlog further explained that players will be given control over Atreus and that they can even ask him to do a few things. Still, Atreus has a mind of his own and he will be able to do some things even without the player asking him to.

As engineering lead Jeet Shroff noted in an earlier sponsored post published on Gamasutra, Atreus possesses a "key role in autonomously aiding and complementing Kratos." Developers also included systemic AI designed to make sure that Atreus acts in accordance to his role within the game and the story being told.

Atreus is not expected to be a liability in the new "God of War" PS4 game, and he could even end up being Kratos' most valuable ally.
