'Godzilla: Monster Planet' Movie Release Date, Latest News: Iconic Monster Teams Up With Sanrio and Marui Group Ahead of Premiere

A colossal cultural icon lives on and is about to hit Japanese theaters later this year in the upcoming CGI animated monster movie, "Godzilla: Kaijuu Wakusei (Godzilla: Monster Planet)." And as part of its promotional campaign, Godzilla has teamed up with the most unlikely companions.

The King of Monsters seems to have found great new friends in popular Sanrio characters in a series of collaboration arts that were put on display together with the movie poster at the Gate City Ohsaki first basement floor atrium from Sept. 1–8.

Godzilla was looking uncharacteristically happy and polite as he interacted with various Sanrio characters that included the Little Twin Stars, Pompompurin, My Melody, and the equally popular Hello Kitty.

These collaboration arts are meant to promote not only the movie but also the upcoming collaborative Sanrio/Godzilla items that will be made available on the official Godzilla Store soon. The said items will be offered online first before they hit retail stores all over Japan.

Additionally, the iconic monster has also landed a collaboration with the Japanese retail company Marui Group and is set to appear in a series of special Marui Halloween events in selected Marui modi stores from Friday, Sept. 29 to Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Godzilla will also be appearing in four different Epos Card designs, which will also include one from the 2016 kaiju movie, "Shin Godzilla." Applications for the special edition cards will begin on Friday, Sept. 29, and can be done in any of the Marui modi stores or on the Epos Card website.

"Godzilla: Monster Planet" is set in a future world where a new ecosystem has emerged and Godzilla has been dominating over mankind for the past 20,000 years. A group of space explorers aboard the Aratrum, an interstellar emigration vessel sent to scout a distant planet that turned out to be inhabitable for humans, return to take Godzilla down once and for all and take back their rightful place on Earth.

The movie will premiere on Friday, Nov. 17 in various theaters across Japan. It will also be available for streaming on Netflix in the same month.
