'Good Omens' Finds Archangel Gabriel; Jon Hamm Joins Neil Gaiman Amazon Series
Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm is joining the Amazon series "Good Omens" as the messenger of God. He is playing the role of the archangel Gabriel in the adaptation of the Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel.
Gaiman described the angel Gabriel on "Good Omens" as tall, good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed. The author said that they were in luck since Hamm already fitted the character's description to perfection and he's free to work on the show. It also helped that the actor is a fan of the novel, which was published in 1990.
"I read 'Good Omens' almost 20 years ago," Hamm revealed. "I thought it was one of the funniest, coolest books I'd ever read."
Hamm, who starred on "Mad Men" for seven seasons, admitted that he initially thought the novel would be hard to adapt on screen. When a script landed on his lap, however, he knew he should become part of the series.
"Good Omens" is a comedy about the Apocalypse. Judgement will soon come to men but some angels and demons regret what's about to happen since they have been living a cozy life and have grown fond of humans.
They try to sabotage the Apocalypse by making sure that the Antichrist will not be able to carry out his part in the end of the world. Warlock is living among humans as an 11-year-old and the angels and demons keep close watch over him.
Only, Warlock is not the Antichrist as there has been a mix up at the hospital during his birth. The real Antichrist is a regular kid, Adam, who has no idea who he really is.
Gaiman said he's been trying to write "Good Omens" as series for the last 30 years. He eventually knew what would make it better on the small screen. He needed to expand the characters of the angels.
Hamm will join Michael Sheen (Aziraphale) and David Tennant (Crowley) who play the lead angel and demon characters on "Good Omens." The show is currently in production.
"Good Omens" will have a six-episode run on BBC in the U.K. Viewers in the U.S., however, will be able to watch the show via the streaming platform Amazon sometime in 2019.
