Google Pixel C Release Date, Specs Rumors: Impressive Performance; Device Now Available
Google's new Pixel C was launched December 8. But even before its release, leaked benchmark tests reveal that the hotly anticipated tablet is a powerful high-end device with impressive specs.
The Pixel C 2-in-1 was unveiled at Google's Nexus event in September, with the company announcing that it will be released by the end of the year. And now, starting December 8, the device is now commercially available.
Before December 8, those eagerly awaiting the tablet's release were taking clues wherever they can, beginning with a tweet from Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google's Senior Vice President of Android, Chromecast, and Chrome OS. Last week, Lockheimer tweeted a photo of the device as it went through a TSA checkpoint and said that he will test it while on his flight. Google fans took this as an indication of the tablet's imminent release. Meanwhile, the Dutch tech site Tweakers had also correctly reported that Google will begin selling the Pixel C from its Play Store on Dec. 8.
Google has released a tablet alongside its Nexus phones every year since 2012, when it launched the Nexus 7. This year, the tech company did not unveil a Nexus tablet to go with the Nexus 9P and 5X phones, but did introduce the Pixel C. The Pixel C resembles a Chromebook and was built by the same team behind the acclaimed Chromebook Pixel.
Ahead of its commercial launch, benchmark sites Geekbench and GFXBench got ahold of the tablet and it appears that the Pixel C is a real powerhouse. The Pixel C earned high scores in both tests, giving customers a glimpse into the tablet's impressive peformance. Geekbench revealed that the tablet earned a single-core score of 1,395 and a multi-core score of 4,345. With 4GB of RAM, the scores would have been even higher.
The Pixel C features a 10.2-inch display with 2,560 x 1,800 pixels, an Nvidia Tegra X1 64-bit processor, a 256-core Maxwell GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB and 64GB of storage, an 8-megapixel main camera, and a 2-megapixel front-shooter. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
According to Google, the Pixel C tablet is sold for $500 for 32GB of storage and $600 for 64GB. The keyboard will cost an additional $150, which means that the minimum price for the tablet-laptop hybrid is $650.
