GoPro Hero 6 News: No Definite Release Date, Coming Out Sometime in 2017

GoPro CEO Nick Woodman himself has confirmed the release of new cameras and accessories in 2017, among them the new Hero 6. Details are still upcoming on the definite schedule for the new action camera's launch.

The GoPro CEO has not yet given any details on the possible specs of the upcoming Hero 6. While the company may yet reveal specs in the future, they've committed to keeping quiet about their release schedule, as bikeradar reports.

It is reasonable to expect, however, that the new action cameras will match or exceed the 4K video recording feature of the Hero 5. It's possible that the new GoPro Hero will improve on the previous model's 30 frames per second when shooting 4k video. The touchscreen and voice control capabilities of the Hero 5 could possibly make it over as well.

It remains to be seen if the new GoPro can improve on its built-in waterproof casing. Whether GoPro will decide to make its Global Positioning System (GPS) standard for newer models is up for speculation, as well as the ability to shoot images in raw format. These two features are currently exclusive to the GoPro Hero 5 Black.

A very interesting development, however, is expected if the company can realize its vision of a single 360 GoPro device this year. Currently, 360 videos shot with the GoPro are done with an array of six cameras. For shooting a stereoscopic video for virtual reality (VR), the number of cameras needed can go up to 16 or 24.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 held in Las Vegas, Woodman spoke to Engadget about relaunching the troubled Karma drone line, and a 360 GoPro. The concept, as shared by Woodman, is of a single multi-lens GoPro that records a spherical video. As the video plays, a user can move his or her phone or VR headset to watch the 360 scene from another angle.

"With VR, 360 video will be the ultimate GoPro," according to Woodman. "And If I'm saying we're calling this the ultimate, ultimate GoPro, you can imagine our focus and dedication on it."
