'Grey's Anatomy' News: Jason George Exits Medical Drama to Join Firefighter Spinoff

Jason George is the newest addition to ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff series.

George, who is best known for playing Dr. Ben Warren in the flagship drama, is officially heading to the Seattle Fire Department. Reports note that the actor's casting does not come as a huge surprise. The season 13 finale already hinted at Ben's fate when he joined in the efforts to save Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) from the major explosion that rocked Grey Sloan.

The still-untitled spinoff is slated for a midseason debut. It will center on a heroic team of firefighters based in Seattle. From the captain down to the newest recruit, the series tells the story of the courageous men and women who risk their lives as well as their hearts both in the line of duty and in their personal lives.

The former "Grey's Anatomy" star joins newcomer and "Rosewood" alum Jaina Lee Ortiz, who is rumored to be the program's leading lady. As Deadline points out, the lead characters are expected to make their debut in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" this fall before the offshoot premieres. George is slated to begin the season on the flagship program before heading to the spinoff. This means fans will still see him donning his scrubs next season on "Grey's Anatomy."

"It was up to Shonda to tell us when she had inspiration for something that made sense, which was pretty recent," ABC Studios president Patrick Moran told The Hollywood Reporter about how they came up with the spin-off idea. "We talked about the elements of 'Grey's Anatomy' that seem to resonate with the audience — emotional storytelling, deep human connection, a high-stakes environment and strong and empowered women — and those elements will carry over to the spinoff."

ABC has yet to announce a premiere date for the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff.
