'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 Spoilers, Plot Latest News: Episode 14 Recap 'The Distance'
This week on "Grey's Anatomy," Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) thinks she might be in over her head as she tries to save Dr. Nicole Herman's (Geena Davis) life. Meanwhile, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) does an extremely difficult procedure by herself, and the results will dictate whether she can take over for Dr. Herman.
Amelia is overwhelmed as she prepares to perform surgery on Dr. Herman. Stephanie finds Amelia staring at the ceiling, with her hands on her hips, and Amelia tells her that she's in a superhero pose. She says that she once read that standing in that pose before a challenging task can help make you more confident and help you perform better. Stephanie joins her, and they both do the superhero pose.
The viewing room overlooking the operating table where Amelia will do the surgery is packed. Everyone in the hospital has been talking about how difficult it is to remove Dr. Herman's brain tumor, so naturally they wanted to see what's going to happen. At this point, Amelia begins to do the surgery.
Meanwhile, Arizona is doing surgery on a fetus—still inside its mother's womb. Bailey previously fought for Dr. Herman to save the baby, and now, the task has been handed off to Arizona. Arizona is losing confidence as she imagines seeing Herman calling her a failure. Not helping matters is Bailey, who keeps on badgering her. Finally, Arizona tells Bailey to shut up, as one tiny slip of her hand could kill the mother, or the baby. Later, Arizona manages to save the baby and the mother, which makes Bailey very happy.
Dr. Webber visits Amelia at the operating room, and she begs him to call her brother, Derek, to have him on the next plane to Seattle to perform the surgery on Herman. Webber refuses to call Derek, and he says while he knows that Derek will be more than willing to do the surgery, there's a chance that the surgery might go badly as it was Amelia who planned out the whole procedure.
Webber's words have a positive effect on Amelia, and she goes right back to the operating room. Later, Amelia hits a snag as her protective gloves, designed to protect her from radiation during the procedure, starts giving her trouble. She whips off the gloves and is exposed to the radiation for 15 minutes.
The tumor is removed. At the end of the episode, Herman opens her eyes. Amelia and Arizona remove her breathing tubes and they go over the post brain surgery evaluation. Herman manages to do all that, but she's not 100 percent perfect—Herman is blind.
