'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Episode 17 Recap: Owen−Nathan Rift Explained; Wilmer Valderrama Debut
The April 7 episode of "Grey's Anatomy" did much to put the hit show's viewers in the clear regarding the reason for the existing animosity between the two doctors' Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), although one cannot help but think there's more to the story than it just having to do with Megan Hunt, Owen's sister's, death.
The trio consisting of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Hunt, and Riggs took an ambulance ride to pick up a heart for transport, but no amount of juggling by Mer could keep their conversation from falling apart when, by mentioning that Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) had moved back in with her, Owen only grumbles Mer should tell his ex, Amelia, that he was not an alcoholic, leading Riggs to talk of having bought a drink for Amelia, not having known she was one.
Just as things were heating up, the trio arrive for the heart only to find they had lost it. Then and there, Owen begins a tirade against Riggs, saying, "Disaster happens wherever you are...like with Megan."
Mer, caught in the midst of it tried to calm Owen down saying Riggs had not known of Amelia's alcoholism and had tried to talk Megan from getting on the helicopter. And that was when Owen sprang the truth on Mer.
"He didn't say anything to her. He wasn't anywhere near that chopper, he was off screwing some woman from supply court," Owen tells Mer. "That's why Meghan got on the chopper to get away from him. My sister was leaving him. When I said we hate him, I meant it."
In a later confrontation, Owen tells Riggs to stop lying and stop pretending to be a "nice guy."
And so, while there had been only a rift between them, now, there was this wide and gaping maw that kept the two former friends, Owen and Riggs, at opposite ends. But this was not all that went down at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during that explosive episode.
Wilmer Valderrama made his debut on the show as the musician patient Kyle Diaz, who was admitted for hand tremors just as he was to get his big break in the music industry. But Valderrama was not all that sad, after all, he kept eyeing Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton), though she did not seem to respond favorably to the attention. But Amelia did deal with his tremors.
Another drama that unfolded was that between Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) and their baby, along with some meddling on the part of Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen). April had overheard Avery talk of Jackson "playing dirty" and saying he was going after April for fraud and full custody. Because of this, April decided she did not want to wait to find out what Jackson would really do, and so, she filed a restraining order against him. But she quickly realizes what a big mistake that was when she went home and found a crib from him with a note attached that he was game for however she wanted to proceed with their situation.
With only a few more weeks left till the season finale, actor Jason George reveals to Moviefone that the season ending will be leaving "jaws on the floor."
"Grey's Anatomy" airs on ABC every Thursday at 8 p.m.
