'Grey's Anatomy' Season 13: Will Ellen Pompeo Return for More Seasons?
The life span of the hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" will depend on lead star Ellen Pompeo's willingness to go on and tell the story of Meredith Grey.
In an interview with Variety, the actress revealed that she and show creator Shonda Rhimes have talked about what could bring about the show's conclusion.
"Shonda and I have both said that when I'm ready to stop, we're going to stop the show. The story is about Meredith Grey's journey and when I'm done, the show will end," she explained.
For now, it looks like Pompeo is not looking to leave "Grey's Anatomy" anytime soon. As the season 13 finale draws near, the show was picked up for another season.
The star knows that with a mega-successful and long-running show like "Grey's Anatomy," quitting it is the last thing that she will think of doing.
"Why walk away from a hit? You don't walk away from something for nothing. And with the track record out there, I'm good to keep doing it for now," she explained.
At the moment, Pompeo has no concrete plan on when she will leave "Grey's Anatomy" and is open to what the "universe presents" her.
"I don't know how long the show will go on. I know the network and the studio like to say they see no end in sight, but I think the audience will tell us when the show is no-longer a fan favorite," the actress said.
"I think it's quite arrogant to assume the show can go on forever — I don't like that approach. Right now, we're very lucky to have the fans still hanging on, and I think the fans will let us know when it's time to stop the show," she went on to say.
Pompeo recently made her directorial debut in the previous "Grey's Anatomy" season 13 episode, "Be Still, My Soul." The series will be back on Thursday, April 6, for episode 19, "What's Inside."
