'Guardians Of The Galaxy 3' News, Spoilers: Third 'Guardians' Film Planned for MCU Phase 4
While Marvel fans are currently focused on the highly anticipated "Captain America: Civil War," which drops in a few weeks, and on the rest of the Marvel films lined up for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that a third "Guardians of the Galaxy" film will be included in Phase 4.
In an interview with iO9, Feige spoke about what's in store for the MCU beyond Phase 3 and said that the ragtag bunch of unlikely heroes in "Guardians" will certainly be a part of the MCU future.
"We're only working on what's been announced through the end of 2019," Feige said. "And it is still a big chess board for 2020 and beyond, but certainly I would say Guardians 3 is [one film that's] up there. I don't know what exactly the order will be."
Though a potential "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" is still only in the planning phase, releasing a third GOTG film is an unsurprising move, as the first film proved to be both a critical and commercial success. Apart from its phenomenal ticket sales, the first "Guardians" film was also lucrative in terms of merchandise sold. Even its soundtrack set records.
And because of the Guardian's space-faring adventures, a third GOTG film could set the stage for various other Marvel storylines in Phase 4 and could be a clever way of introducing new characters into the MCU.
Also, as Screen Rant notes, the entire main cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy" is locked in to three GOTG films, which means that a "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" is inevitable.
In an interview with Indiewire in 2014, "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn shared that he already had stories in mind for the second film and beyond, even as he was filming the first.
"…To be honest, I had the basic story for number two while I was working on number one, and perhaps even beyond that," he said.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," which is currently in production, hits theaters May 5, 2017.
