Guillermo Del Toro on 'Pacific Rim 2': 'It moved further'

When Pacific Rim was released last year 2013, it garnered fans from all over the world despite how some did not think it was a smash movie at all. And now, all that fans really clamor for is a part two of the sci-fi man vs. monster action movie. The good news is that a "Pacific Rim 2" was really in the making. The bad news, however, is that its release is indefinite.

According to Slash Film, the sequel has been "halted indefinitely," making fans wonder if it will ever be released or if it will end up being cancelled altogether just like what happened to "Tron 3." With a working title "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom," the sequel's holdup isn't explained by Universal but speculations say that it has something to do with the finances. Entertainment Weekly reported that the first "Pacific Rim" barely accumulated over $100 million domestically.

But because of its gross income in China alone, which reached $111 million, the movie was able to sum up over $400 million in global profits. Considering such data, a sequel to the sci-fi action flick may not be a good plan. However, as reported in Comic Book, Director Guillermo Del Toro said that "Pacific Rim 2" is still happening despite the indefinite hold.

"We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks," Del Toro said. "As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it. It moved further."

Reports say that the staff and crew of the movie were supposed to start filming this coming November as it was initially set to be released on August 2017. But because of the hold-up, it looks like no filming will take place for "Pacific Rim 2" this year. Del Toro also mentioned that he may do a different movie while waiting for the go signal.

It looks like fans will just have to wait along with Del Toro to see more of the Kaiju battling with the massive robots Jaegers again soon.
