'Halo 5' New Game Types, Playlist Confirmed to Come as Early as February
Fans now have firm proof that 343 Industries is working on integrating new game types and top Forge maps to the game. Josh Holmes, the game's executive producer, told fans in the Team Beyond forums that a community playlist and some new classic game types should be available starting February.
"We're working on a community playlist now and it should be live within the next month. It's been pretty incredible seeing what the Forge community has been able to build so quickly with the new toolset and we want to showcase some of those creations," Holmes said. "As Bravo has hinted, we're also working on some new classic game types. We're hoping to release the first of those toward the end of February, testing permitting."
Holmes clarified that "classic game types" refer to actual game modes, not classic settings in existing game types. The executive producer, however, did not explain further what he meant by "first of those." Whether he means only one game mode or the first batch remains to be seen.
343 Industries had previously stated in its first update of the year that it was working at identifying the best community maps and playlists were already in the works as of Jan. 8. As for game types, the developer revealed these could range from competitive maps, classic remakes, and even "wacky and fun" custom-built maps and game variants. Guardians can also expect Grifball and Fiesta to come in future "Halo 5" updates, but there's no word yet if other fan favorites — Infection, Big Team Battle Heavies, King of the Hill, and Oddball — will be added to the game. The developer said further that although final timelines are not set yet, "things are going through engineering, test and polish."
The upcoming changes are a welcome addition to the game, which currently lacks variety in game modes and in-game community integration. Introducing new game modes could extend the game's re-playability, while highlighting the community's most popular content could make players much more engaged. The upcoming new game modes and playlist is a sign that Microsoft is listening to user feedback and making improvements and updates based on those.
