Hater App: When You Don't 'Like' Something, Hate It
Jake Banks is tired of all the positive chitchat that has been going on across social media platforms. To exact his vengeance, he introduced the Hater app. But can it be used for good?
For those who wake up on a Monday morning and decided that they don't really "like" anything on Facebook, Banks has developed the latest solution. His new app functions much like Instagram, but as the name of the app suggests, its sole purpose if for posting the things you hate.
"It's really an answer to everything out there in social media. All you can do is 'like' things," Banks told Mashable. "I don't want to be the guy pretending to be someone I'm not. I want to be real and say, 'I'm sitting in traffic and I hate this.'"
Users of the app, which launched Friday on the iPhone, can upload pictures of things that irk them to the "Hater" community, where other haters can share in their grief. If that isn't enough, users can also upload posts from their other social media sites and hate on that too.
"It's a little more self-deprecating and a little more fun," Banks said, explaining the app. "You're sitting at work, working a 12-hour shift and you go on Facebook and you see your friend from high school is on his third vacation of the month, and he's taking pictures of his food and all that. Now you can snapshot it and Hate it."
But it isn't all bad, Banks added. Users can also use the app to inspire change, the former New York commercial director suggested.
"It doesnt have to be so negative. You might hate something so much you want to change it, which is the complete opposite of what happens when you Like something," Banks told Mashable, arguing that the app could "create awareness."
