'Heaven Is For Real' Sequel TV Series Happening At NBC

In 2014, TriStar and Sony had a box office hit in their hands when they came out with a faith-based movie titled "Heaven Is For Real." According to a report in Deadline, the TV division of Sony Pictures is working on a television drama series that is based on the film. The TV series is a sequel of the feature film.

The 2014 film was based on a best-selling book of the same title, authored by Pastor Todd Burpo. The TV series, according to the report, is going to be based on another book written by Todd and Sonya Burpo titled "Heaven Changes Everything." The series is being set up at the NBC network, which has shown interest in shows that have faith-based themes.

In 2010, Todd Burpo published the first book wherein he describes how his son's near-death experience brought him to experience Heaven first-hand. When the boy starts talking about the people he met while he was in Heaven, his parents started fearing for him as he might be ridiculed by other people. In the second book, the Burpos write about what happened to their family after the events they described in the first book. Because of his son's experience and his wanting to share it with others, the small-town pastor and his family were put in the spotlight, something that they had to deal with while trying to minister to the town folks. While the film was based on the first book, the TV series, according to the report, will look at how the Burpos were able to make adjustments and continue their ministry despite all the media attention on their son.

The series will reportedly consist of hour-long episodes and will be written and executive produced by Randy Brown, otherwise known for this work in "Trouble with the Curve." Other executive producers are the Burpos, "Heaven Is For Real" producers Joe Roth and T.D. Jakes, and minister DeVon Franklin, who was previously involved in overseeing the 2014 movie at Sony.

"Heaven Is For Real" was shown in April 2014, and earned over $100 million in the box office, with only a $12 million production budget.
