'Homeland' Season 5 Spoilers News: Show to Tackle Real World Issues
"Homeland" is returning for its fifth season on Oct. 4 on the Showtime network. The TV drama series will still star Claire Danes as Carrie Mathieson, but this season will be bringing some changes to the show's setting and the topics it will be tackling in the show.
According to a report in the Latin Post, the main difference is the fact that the new season will be taking on real-world issues and events that are prominent in the international front. These include ISIS, the attack on Charlie Hebdo, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and Edward Snowden and other activities and personalities labelled as terrorist and extremist.
Network president David Nevins revealed as much during the TCA press tour in Beverly Hills recently, saying that the first episode of the series will be tackling the topic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"The first episode's going to deal with Russia -- what's Putin up to? What's going on with this tricky relationship there?" he said, adding that other topics will be covered in future episodes.
"It deals with ISIS. Charlie Hebdo. (Edward) Snowden, cyber terrorism, surveillance. These are interesting elements to the season, which brings a lot of things together," Nevins continued.
The other principal difference with this season is the main character Carrie Mathieson is no longer with the CIA and has relocated in Germany. It is set two years after the events of Season 4, and Mathieson is working for a private security firm based in Berlin. When asked why Germany was selected as the setting, Nevins explained that Berlin "is a crossroads between the old eastern block and the western block, a crossroads between Western Europe and the Muslim world. It's also a place with the strictest privacy laws in the world."
The upcoming season also returns with other series regulars such as Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn, Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson, F. Murray Abraham as Dar Adal and Miranda Otto as Allison Carr.
