'Hotel Transylvania 2' News: Film to Premier in 2015, Mel Brooks to Star With Adam Sandler
The sequel to "Hotel Transylvania" will feature a comedy legend. This week, it was announced that Mel Brooks will star in the upcoming animated film. The iconic writer, director, and actor will voice Vlad—the grumpy old father of Adam Sandler's Dracula.
Brooks and Sandler will be joined by the original cast of "Hotel Transylvania," which includes Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, and Andy Samberg.
In an interview with USA Today, Brooks said that Vlad is "like my honest to goodness personality. I'm pretty grumpy," he jokes. "It was a good choice."
The first "Hotel Transylvania" explored the generational gap between Drac and his daughter Mavis (Gomez), her desire to see the world outside the family business and her attraction to the human Jonathan (Samberg).
In the sequel, Vlad comes to town to visit his estranged son, and his arrival will create chaos for the hotel, its regulars, but mostly for his family.
Speaking with USA Today, producer Michelle Murdoca says of Vlad, "He actually lives in a cave—he is about as old school as it gets. So when he comes and sees that Dracula is running a hotel, he's like, 'What's going on here?'"
Brooks also revealed that his character can be mean and is a fan of tough love.
"He doesn't treat Dracula with a lot of respect and they're often at odds. It makes for some wonderful comedy," said the 88-year old Brooks.
It was reported that Sandler personally called up Brooks to offer him the role.
"And I said, 'Adam, are you sitting down?'" he said. "It's a little shocking—I am your father."
One reason why Brooks accepted the offer was because he was excited to work with Sandler at the recording booth.
"He's easy to play vocal ping pong with. He's very helpful in indicating there's more than meets the eye here. There are some complicated feelings that should be expressed, and he helped me with that," said Brooks.
"Hotel Transylvania 2" arrives in theaters on Sept. 25, 2015.
