Huawei Mate 10 Release Date, Specs News: Huawei Hints at 'Real AI Phone,' Mocks 'Failed' Face ID Demo in New Teaser

Huawei recently hinted of an upcoming smartphone, presumably the Mate 10, and emphasized its artificial intelligence features. Meanwhile, in a recently released trailer, the company mocked Apple's new Face ID.

This season is undoubtedly a hectic one for the smartphone industry. With Samsung and Apple unveiling their flagship devices in August and September, respectively, it is up to other major manufacturers like Huawei to rise up to the challenge.

In a new video teaser, Huawei made fun of the supposedly failed first attempt to demonstrate unlocking an iPhone X with the new Face ID last Sept. 12. However, there were succeeding reports that suggested the Face ID worked fine during the said incident.

After mocking Apple, the same Huawei teaser hinted that "the real AI phone" would be unveiled on Monday, Oct. 16 – a date previously confirmed as the schedule for the unveiling of the Mate 10 series in Munich, Germany.

Back at the IFA 2017 earlier this month, Huawei unveiled a "Neural Processing Unit" chip, the Kirin 970, and confirmed that it would debut in the upcoming Mate 10 series. At the event, Huawei CEO Richard Yu emphasized how the Kirin 970 was not designed to just be the "fastest" mobile chip but also to become the most effective chip for AI technology.

To explain Kirin 970's capacity, Yu presented photos taken with a Kirin 970-powered smartphone and explained (via Forbes): "It can tell the difference between a cat or a flower when you're trying to take photos, and the (Image Signal Processors) will adjust accordingly."

"The NPU can think and actively work to provide you the best user experience, whereas other A.I. assistance like Google Assistant only works reactively," he added.

The CEO later on confirmed that the photos shown on stage were taken with the Mate 10.

Meanwhile, mobile reporter Evan Blass also shared a leaked render of the alleged Mate 10. If the photo checks out with the final product, the base Mate 10 device can be expected to sport very thin side bezels.

When a follower said he was hoping for a bezel-less device, Blass replied simply with: "Mate 10 Pro."
