Huawei VR, First Mobile VR Headset to Feature 360-Degree Sound
Huawei is the latest company to enter the race to consumer VR supremacy, as the Chinese multi-national announces its new virtual reality headset. Huawei's VR headset is poised to rival Samsung's Gear VR.
Unlike Facebook's Oculus Rift and the Vive from Valve and HTC which both require a PC to function, Huawei's VR headset will only need a smartphone. Dubbed simply as "Huawei VR," the device works in pretty much the same fashion as the Samsung Gear VR, according to Engadget. Place a phone with a VR app running inside the device and viola. The publication further reports that the Huawei VR will come in three variants that will work with the new P9, P9 Plus, and Mate 8. As these phones have 1080p resolution, there might be some issues with quality.
However, a conflicting report claims the Huawei VR won't need any phone as it come with its own display which connects to a host phone through a USB cable. This is reminiscent of the LG 360 VR headset. The display reportedly has 639 ppi which could solve any quality issues.

In any case, reports agree that the Huawei VR is the first to offer 360-degree sound field, provided the right content is loaded and users have their headphones plugged in. Many consumers might also be excited with the huge content that's reported coming with Huawei VR at launch. The device is supposed to have more than 4,000 free movies, more than 40 free games, more than 350 panoramic images, and more than 150 panoramic tours.
The new Huawei VR headset was announced during the launch of its P9 and P9 Plus smartphones in Shanghai, China. The company announced the two new phones in London last week. Digital Trends suggests with the device skipping the new phones' London unveiling last week, it could mean the VR headset might not have an international release. This isn't not confirmed though, as Huawei has not revealed the device's price, availability, and release date yet.
