'I, Tonya' Release Date, News: Official Trailer Features Margot Robbie as Disgraced Former Figure Skater Tonya Harding

The official trailer for "I, Tonya" starring Margot Robbie (as Tonya Harding) and Sebastian Stan (as Jeff Gillooly) has been released.

The black comedy film tells the story of Tonya, a former figure skater who gained notoriety for hiring someone to injure her fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan's leg.

The trailer opens with Harding walking into a room for a press conference as Robbie narrates in the background. She is swarmed by reporters and, after a series of clips flash on-screen, she is seen on the ice rink.

"Everyone has their own truth," she says in a voiceover.

The film also consists of fake documentary interviews, which was also previewed in the trailer. Harding's childhood was not an easy one, as evidenced by her overbearing mother (Allison Janney). The figure skater wanted to make a name for herself and prove to everyone that she could be someone great. The trailer also previews Harding's romance and eventual marriage to Gillooly.

As history goes, Harding would ask for Gillooly's help in breaking competitor Kerrigan's leg. While she was connected to the incident, she ultimately avoided prosecution and prison time. Based on the trailer, Robbie's Harding denies having ordered the attack against her competitor.

Robbie spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming film and explained that it came about because of interviews conducted with both Harding and her ex-husband.

"The structure of the film was born out of the fact that [screenwriter Steven Rogers] did a six-hour interview with Tonya and felt like there were so many questions left unanswered that he went and did an equally long interview with Jeff. Then he found that both interviews contradicted each other so much that he was like, 'Oh, wow, that's the movie,'" she said.

She also revealed that she drew inspiration from the audio recording of the Olympics, which she found at a Japanese outlet. From that, they recreated the events to a tee.

"Any of those iconic moments that people may have a sense of nostalgia for we tried to replicate as close as possible," she said.

"I, Tonya" will premiere in U.S. cinemas on Dec. 8.
