Ian Somerhalder, Nikki Reed News: Couple Issues Apology After Birth Control Controversy
New parents Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder has issued an apology after finding themselves in hot water about their pregnancy story that involved the latter throwing the former's birth control pills.
In a joint statement they posted on Twitter, the two apologized to those who were offended by their story and reiterated that it was both their decision to get pregnant.
To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry. That is an extremely serious issue, and women's rights is something that is incredibly important to both of us. It is something we've been very vocal about, and something that is very close to our hearts.
They added that they were just "poking fun at each other" recalling how a "goofy moment" ultimately led them to decide together to start a family.
Reed and Somerhalder choose to see the silver lining of it all as the reaction to their story allowed such a serious issue to get the attention it needs. For those who do not know, in the latest Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast, the two revealed that they started trying to have a baby back in 2016 in Barcelona although Reed admitted she was still unsure at that time if she wanted to be a mom. She then revealed that Somerhalder went through her purse and threw out all of her birth control pills. "That was it. That was also presumptuous," she said with a laugh. Somerhalder chimed in and joked about how the struggle of getting rid of the birth control pills.
By the way, this was the beginning of the pack, so I had to pop all of those suckers out. There were like 25 of them. It's a lot of work, especially after a little sangria.
Reed also called out writers who took their remarks out of context to spin a story that claimed that her husband "forced her into pregnancy."
Don't talk about consent to me. And lastly, how dare you try to cast a dark shadow over one of the happiest most memorable days of my life – you're not only disrespecting me but my baby.
