'In The Heart Of The Sea' News: Chris Hemsworth Reveals Drastic Weight Loss For Film, Says He 'Wouldn't Recommend It'

One of the reasons Chris Hemsworth has gained fame in recent years is his portrayal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero/Norse god "Thor," a part that often and perfectly showcases his good looks and muscle-bound physique. But in Hemsworth's latest Instagram snap, the actor resembles Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" more than himself in any of his recent films.

On Sunday, the former "Sexiest Man Alive" shocked fans when he posted a photo of himself looking half-starved and decidedly gaunt. "Just tried a new diet/training program called 'Lost At Sea.' Wouldn't recommend it..," he captioned the photo.

The "Avengers" actor reportedly slimmed down to a nearly-skeletal physique for his new film "In the Heart of the Sea." According to E! Online, Hemsworth told Jimmy Kimmel that the cast had to "get rather skinny" and were on a gruelling diet of "about 500 or 600 calories a day." To stay healthy, a man of the actor's size would have to consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories a day.

"We kind of went insane, weighing ourselves every day," Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly in August. "We all felt like a bunch of supermodels, trying to get down in weight for a show, or something. That's all we spoke about. You've got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet, and who'd lost more weight, and who's looking really skinny. It's ridiculous!"

"In the Heart of the Sea" is a cinematic retelling of real-life events that occurred in the 19th century. It tells the story of the sinking of the whaling ship Essex, which was crewed by Captain George Pollard, Jr. (played by Benjamin Walker), first officer Owen Chase (played by Hemsworth), second officer Matthew Joy (played by Cillian Murphy), and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson (played by Tom Holland). After the Essex was rammed and sunk by an enormous sperm whale, the crew was left drifting at sea for over 90 days. The story of the sinking of the Essex inspired Herman Melville to write the classic novel "Moby Dick."

"In the Heart of the Sea" was directed by Ron Howard, who also directed Hemsworth in the 2013 film "Rush." It hits theaters on December 11, 2015.
