India Overtakes U.S. To Claim The Title of Being The World's Second Largest Smartphone Market

a new analysis from a global technology analyst firm Canalys has indicated that a significant part of the consumers come from India, and the country has successfully overtaken the U.S. as the world's second-largest smartphone market with China remaining ahead of it.

The smartphone market has been bustling with activity in the past few months, with tech giants unveiling one flagship after another. Considering the growing list of capabilities of each smartphone, more consumers have become interested in having one.

"This growth comes as a relief to the smartphone industry. Doubts about India's market potential are clearly dispelled by this result," said Canalys' Ishan Dutt, as reported by Engadget. "There are close to 100 mobile device brands sold in India, with more vendors arriving every quarter. In addition, India has one of the most complex channel landscapes, but with low barriers to entry. Growth will continue. Low smartphone penetration and the explosion of LTE are the main drivers."

Further reports indicate that India crossed the 40 million mark in smartphone shipments in the third quarter of the year. Although China remains ahead at 110 million shipments, analysts have long believed in the potential of the Indian market to dominate the charts. Currently, the smartphone market in the country mostly come from Chinese and Korean companies, with Samsung and Xiaomi leading the race. The U.S., on the other hand, has significantly been able to ship many of their devices, but the consumers have yet to have enough budget to subscribe to the significantly more expensive iPhones.

Vivo, Oppo, and Lenovo are also on the list of the top five vendors in India, and analysts are expecting Xiaomi to overtake Samsung soon enough. As to whether or not Apple's iPhone will be able to make a stand in the Indian market, fans will have to wait and see.
