Intel Kaby Lake X: Leak Offers Look at New Core i7-7740K

A new leak may have just given fans an unexpected glimpse at Intel's upcoming Kaby Lake X, with a focus on the Core i7-7740K, specifically. And if there is any truth to this supposed leak, then AMD may have tough competition on the horizon.

The leak apparently came from SiSoftware through the use of the benchmarking tool SANDRA. It is expected that the Core i7-7740K will be a quad-core chip that clocks at 3.4 GHz. A Turbo boost of 4.5 GHz is also anticipated as well as Hyper-Threading. It is based on the X299 chipset. The leak also shows the Core i7-7740K running on the upcoming ASRock X299 Professional Gaming i7 motherboard.

According to Videocardz, the Core i7-7740K will not come with an integrated graphics processing unit, though, which sets it apart from the current 7700K available from Intel. However, it will have an increased TDP of up to 112W. The 7700K only has 91W.

Another point of comparison between the upcoming Core i7-7740K and the current 7700K is the base clock. The latter has 100 MHz less than the highly anticipated i7-7740K. The publication notes that this is not surprising because AMD has upped the ante with its new Ryzen offerings.

When compared to AMD's Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core variant, Intel's model shows superiority, except for processor arithmetic, which sees AMD's Ryzen coming out on top.

However, the Kaby Lake X is not the only processor that will be launched by the technological giant. A Skylake X is also expected to come out and will likewise be a part of the HEDT platform. 6-, 8- and 10-core SKUs from Skylake X will be arriving.

Intel has not provided a release date for the Kaby Lake X and Skylake X processors yet, but speculations are rife that it will be sometime in Q3 2017 or earlier.

It is important to keep in mind that these leaks have not been confirmed as of this time. Readers are advised to take this news with a grain of salt for now.
