Iowa Air Show Crash Results in Death of Pilot Following Explosion
Spectators were left in shock during an Iowa air show after a terrible accident resulted in a horrific crash and large explosion.
While performing in an air show in Davenport, Iowa, a pilot crashed into a nearby field, causing the plane to explode. The accident occurred Saturday at the Quad City Air Show, when the pilot made a nosedive into an alfalfa field.
The pilot, who was not immediately identified, died on impact.
"The plane, a high performance L-39 Albatross jet trainer, was attempting a 45-degree bank when it crashed," Assistant Police Chief Don Schaeffer told CNN.
An amateur video shows three planes flying into formation when one appeared to experience difficulty. Within seconds the plane had landed nose first into the field, exploding into a large fireball.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your seats," an announcer said in the video obtained by CNN. "We have training and personnel on board to handle these situations."
Residents nearby claimed that the impact of the plane could be felt from miles away.
"I live about 7 miles from the show," Robert Norwood said on the CNN blog. "I was at home and heard the crash and a huge explosion."
Last year at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada a pilot and ten spectators were killed after a worn out aircraft was going "unprecedented" speeds, according to a Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety organization are currently investigating the most recent accident.
When activity at the air show resumed, following a short delay, "Taps" was played while aircraft flew in formation over the crowd, according to CNN.
