iPad 5th Generation Rear Shell Reveals iPad Mini-like Design

New photos of what is believed to be the iPad 5th generation rear shell reveal that the new tablet will feature a similar design to the iPad mini.

The shell is silver and the photos highlight several features of the part including the separate volume buttons, dual speakers near the device's lightning port on the bottom edge, and a narrower lip for display assembly than what is found on the current model.

The Apple logo on the component is the same silver color as on the iPad mini. However, it is not clearly shown on any of these photos. The black rear of the Apple logo insert can be seen in a photo of the inside of the shell.

Features for the iPad 5th generation model could also include a 13-inch display.

Apple is currently testing a tablet with that screen size, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The publication also claims that the company is testing out iPhones with larger displays, however, that is not surprising as Apple's next-gen smartphone is expected to feature a bigger screen than its predecessors.

The current iPhone comes with a 4-inch display while the 4th generation iPad comes with a 9.7-inch screen. There have been multiple reports regarding the bigger iPhone display; but this is only the second time a change in screen size for iPad has been reported. Back in May, a rumor emerged that said Apple was working on a 12.9-inch iPad.

The older report claimed this device could be called the iPad Maxi and that it would launch in the early part of 2014. All these claims do not really point to Apple actually releasing these products as the company frequently tests devices that never make it to the market.

Samsung is also working on a tablet that surpasses 12 inches in screen size, according to an Android Authority report. The site stated that Samsung was testing this new slate that is codenamed SM-P905, which sports a 12.2-inch display. It was discovered by someone who "keeps track of goods trafficked on India's airports."
