Commentators noted that Apple has often fallen behind with registering domain names before the release of their products.

Apple did not acquire the iPhone4.com domain until July 2011, sfter the June 24 release of the iPhone 4. Currently, iPhone4.com redirects users to the iPhone section of Apple’s official website.

The MacRumors technology website proposes that Apple opted to file a complaint because the owner of the domain names demanded more compensation than Apple was willing to offer.

Due to the name of the websites, Apple may have felt a sense of urgency to resolve the issue and have the pornography association removed.

The DomainNameWire website reported that iPhone4s.com was registered as a domain in August 2008 and suggested that the owner may have been following Apple’s naming conventions.

Commentators said they can understand why Apple would want to acquire iPhone4S.com domain, but they do not feel it necessary to go after the other domains that have a less direct connotation despite "iPhone" and "4S" being apart of the titles.

Apple’s complaint case number is D2011-1897 with the World Intellectual Property Organization.
