iPhone 5 Release Date: Apple's New iPhone 4S Likely to Smash SalesWorld Record

The iPhone 4S has sold more than 4 million units over its first weekend on release making it the fastest selling iPhone ever. Some are now saying it is likely to set the record for the world’s fastest selling consumer electronics gadget.

Damian Field, a spokesman for the Guinness World of Records said, "We eagerly await an official announcement from Apple on sales figures. If the 4S exceeds 156k per day sell-through rate, and this can be independently verified, the 4S will take the record," according to The Guardian.

Apple Inc announced Monday that the high sales figure is the top of any iPhone to date during that initial three-day period.

iPhone 4S sales were "more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in the company announcement.

Preorders have a lot to do with the hugely successful sales weekend for the Cupertino, Calif. Technology giant as more than 1 million iPhone 4S handsets were pre-ordered in the first 24 hours that they were available about a week before the device’s in-store launch.

The previous record for fasting selling tech gadget was set by the iPad 2, which sold at least 156,000 units per day during its first 80 days.

So far, the iPhone 4S is for sale in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan and Britain. According to Apple, the widely in-demand device will be available in 22 countries Oct. 28 and in more than 70 countries by the end of the year.

Apple’s previously bestselling product was iPhone 4 which launched in June 2010.

Sprint said the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S resulted in the most lucrative sales day for any product line it has ever carried.

AT&T was the first carrier to sell the first phone and then Verizon followed shortly thereafter with Sprint being the third to carry the device.
