iPhone 5 Release Date: iPhone 4S Is Real, Features New Super 8MP Camera

The "Let's Talk iPhone" media event is underway and the iPhone 4S has been unveiled as the latest addition to the iPhone family.

Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, discussed the iPhone 4S and detailed that one of the most vital features of the new smartphone is its camera.

“For the iPhone 4S, we set our sights on competing not with other phones, but with point and shoot cameras," Schiller said.

"So we’ve added an 8 megapixel sensor that shoots 3264x2448 … we’ve also added backside illumination with a sensor that gathers 72 percent more light."

"On top of that we’ve placed a hybrid IR filter for better color accuracy … and we have a 5 element lens that offers 30 percent more sharpness, f/2.4 aperture."

Schiller's details have matched speculations exactly.

He went on to say that the iPhone 4S features not only face detection and better auto-white balance, but takes photos significantly faster.

A first shot can be taken in just 1.1 seconds and a second shot can be taken just 0.5 seconds later.

Schiller then joked about the waiting time on competitor phones such as the HTC Sensation, the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Droid Bionic, which takes a first shot in 3.7 seconds and a second shot 1.6 seconds later.

“I don’t know what Droid bionic users do between pictures,” Schiller said. “Get coffee, I guess.”

According to Schiller, video on the iPhone 4S shoots in 1080p HD, a spec that was met with applause.

The video mechanism also features video image stabilization and temporal noise reduction.
