iPhone 8 News and Rumors: New iPhone to Have a Ceramic Body? Other Rumored Specs Revealed
The new iPhone 7 lineup was the talk of the town during its launch. However, the newly incorporated technologies coupled with some questionable moves from Apple garnered a mixed reception from the public. Some are already looking far ahead to the next generation. Here's what we know so far.
New Ceramic Body?
Perhaps one of the most understated launching at Apple's event last week was the Apple Watch 2. However, it came with a very interesting feature that received high praises. The body was made from Zirconia Ceramics.
Apple says that this is one of the hardest materials in the world, and is rumored to be incorporated on the iPhone 8 (or 7s). If that were true, then the iconic aluminum chassis of the iPhone will soon be displaced. This will then result to a much sturdier and solid iPhone 8, with possible stress and bending having little to no effect on the device.
The Zirconia Ceramics, or ZrO2, would be much more scratch resistant than the previously used materials. It will also natively allow radio frequencies to pass through, so visible antenna bands lining the smartphone's back are not necessary anymore. This property also allows for other wireless signals such as cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth to pass through without additional design compromises.
Apple had previously attempted to employ new materials in the iPhone. A sapphire display was set to star in the iPhone 6, but was discontinued as Apple's primary manufacturer for the screen could not produce enough materials. The Zirconia Ceramics, however, are much easier to manufacture, so supply would least likely be an issue.
Other Changes
Being slated to launch on iPhone's tenth anniversary, huge expectations are set for the iPhone 8. With the expectations come new innovations with a promise to keep the device more efficient, productive, and current.
For security, an iris scanner will be incorporated. This would be utilizing infrared technology for the scanning functionality, similar to what the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has implemented.
For the overall design, Apple is looking for a more unibody look. The tech company is aiming to make the device look like a single sheet of glass, which will be achievable if all elements are flush along the body. We have already seen the Home Button of the iPhone 7 being sensitive to pressure. We can expect for the next iPhone to incorporate a virtual Home button to the screen itself.
It will then feature a smaller overall form factor, with thinner bezels. The screen will then be upgraded to an OLED display, complete with dual-curved edges. These technologies and innovations would then directly compete with Samsung's smartphones with the Edge feature.
