iPhone 8 Plus Battery Problems: Apple Investigates Reports of Phones Bursting Open

Apple is currently looking at reports of the iPhone 8 Plus splitting open while being charged — or in one case, right out of the box. The company has acknowledged the issue and is now doing their own investigation.

That's one more thing to note for people deciding if the should hold off on upgrading to the iPhone 8 Plus, at least until Apple figures out just what is happening with several of their iPhone 8 Plus units that have split open.

An iPhone 8 Plus owner in Taiwan reported that her handset split open while charging. Claiming that she only used the cable and charger adapter supplied by Apple, she posted photos online showing the phone split apart from the force of its swollen battery.

The phone is now in Apple's hands as it has been shipped for further analysis, as reported by iFeng via The Next Web. The incidents do not stop there, however, with more reports coming in from Japan.

Two iPhone 8 Plus owners from Japan have also posted online on how their units popped their screens off. One of them even claims to have been greeted with the issue right out of the box. In all cases, the battery seems to have been at fault.

It could be worth noting that like the earlier fiasco with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, rumors suggest that Apple used the same battery supplier for the iPhone 8 Plus. Amperex Technology Limited also supplied the batteries for the Note 7 before it was widely recalled due to incidents of battery leaks, fires and explosions.

"We are aware and are looking into it," an Apple spokeswoman told MacRumors, and that's what the company has said about the issue as of this time. The latest incident has been reported in Hong Kong, where yet another iPhone 8 Plus had its screen pop off.
