The iris scanning is a huge new innovation reintroduced by the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Previous implementations of this technology, such as the one seen on the Lumia 950, were considered somewhat of a failure due to their poor execution. Some were slow while some don't work properly at all, so much of the tech community dismissed the feature as a mere gimmick.
However, with the Galaxy Note 7, the infrared technology utilized by the iris scanner draws precise recording and scanning of the user's eyeball for a quick, easy, and secure way of unlocking the device. This would be the same technology that the new so-called iPhone 8 (or iPhone 7s, if Apple would still be following its branding traditions by then) would be integrating into its hardware.
A report in Chinese language was picked up by an online tech site, stating that a company named Xintec would be starting to enter mass production of iris-recognition chips to fulfill new orders in the fourth quarter of 2016. This would now be including the ones to be embedded in the 2017 models of the iPhone. Xintec specializes in packaging services of CMOS imaging sensors and fingerprint scanners.

The rumor mill has been abuzz with a lot of news regarding the 2017 iPhone models. For one, the iconic Home button is said to be excluded, in favor of a new unibody design that Apple aims to look like a single sheet of glass. This would entail smaller bezels and a handier overall form factor, given the huge display of the Plus lineup.
There are also rumors saying that the screen display will now adopt the OLED technology, as opposed to its traditional IPS LCD. The next gen iPhones are also said to sport dual curved edges for the display. These display technologies, along with the new iris scanner, step right into Samsung's territory of featured innovations.
