iPhone X Problems News: Apple to Ship Just 20 Million Units in 2017 as Production Issues Cut Output in Half

Apple is not doing very well in meeting its target for the iPhone X inventory the company plans to ship out this year, according to reports. Apple could be shipping out half the number of iPhone X units it originally planned as production output fell much lower than expected.

Unfortunately for Apple fans, the iPhone X is expected to be in very short supply by the time the holiday season comes around. Apple will have to settle for just 20 million units in stock this year, half of its original target for 2017, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

It's been a badly kept secret that Apple has been having trouble with the new components that go into every iPhone X device, but nobody outside the company had any idea how much the toll these issues would take on the number of units shipping out this year.

As reports noted, Apple already had trouble getting enough good units out of their new process that uses the new OLED display panels. Even as the company finally gets the production issues for that part settled down in July, the problems with their new face authentication module became their new hurdle, according to The Verge.

Things only improved on that end by September, and by then, the shortage has already become a huge factor in their sales figures for this year. The company is able to produce about 10 million iPhone X units every month, according to reports.

Apple is casting around for additional production capacity for some of the iPhone X components as well, so there's still a chance that their output could significantly improve over the next few weeks until the launch date early next month.

The iPhone X is scheduled to ship out on Nov. 3, with units starting at $999.
