An American citizen who sided with the ISIS troops has been handed over by the Syrian army to the US military, according to a Pentagon spokesperson.

In a statement released through CNN, US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway revealed that the Kurdish troops that are being backed up by the US military surrendered an American citizen who is fighting for the international terrorist group on or before Tuesday, Sept. 12.

"The US citizen is being legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant," Rankine-Galloway stated.

But in early Thursday, Sept. 14, a spokesperson for the US-led coalition that works to fight the ISIS opted not to comment on the news about the American ISIS fighter.

"We have seen those same reports and the SDF as our partner has taken an oath to make sure that any fighters that they capture that they maintain them and bring them to the proper authorities. In this case the proper authorities would be the equivalent of the department of state in the country," Col. Ryan Dillon said in an address meant for the press through a video call from Baghdad.

Another report claimed that the individual still detained legally overseas after he surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces.

US officials reportedly confirmed that there are around 250 Americans who left the country to join the ISIS cells in Syria and Iraq, but there are no details about how many are still left fighting for the organization.

According to a report from NBC News, Seamus Hughes of the George Washington University Program of Extremism mentioned that out of the 60 identified individuals who joined ISIS and its fights, 20 of which already passed away while a number of them who had been captured or defected. This could mean that the American ISIS fighters are now slashed in numbers.
