'It' Movie News, Release Date: Sequel to Still Show Losers' Club Kids; Adult Mike Will Be 'Darker'
The "It" sequel may find the Losers' Club members all grown up, but that does not mean the kids will be completely absent.
Director Andy Muschietti revealed as much while speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the yet-to-be greenlighted sequel.
"If we're telling the story of adults, we are going to have flashbacks that take us back to the '80s and inform the story in the present day," Muschietti said, explaining that the young actors seen in "It" will still be a part of the sequel.
"They are an important component in the next film," sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti added.
"They're a very big part of the action," the director said.
While the "It" sequel has yet to get an official order, it is very likely that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. will only do it as a formality. After all, the film is already in its early development phase.
As fans of Stephen King's novel know, members of the Losers' Club grow up and return to Derry, Maine, to fight the evil creature once again. This means that new actors will have to be cast to play the adult counterparts of the kids in the first film. The young actors have already laid out their dream casting, ranging from Bill Hader to Jessica Chastain.
However, one adult member will probably not be appearing as much in the sequel. Stan Uris, played by Wyatt Oleff, suffered immense trauma at the hands of It and will choose to kill himself as an adult when the creature resurfaces. It is unknown how Muschietti intends to deal with this plot point, as he is known to be changing one other character.
The director told the same publication that adult Mike will be "quite darker" in contrast to the character in the novel.
"I want to make his character the one pivotal character who brings them all together, but staying in Derry took a toll with him," he said. "I want him to be a junkie actually. A librarian junkie. When the second movie starts, he's a wreck."
Since Warner Bros. has yet to greenlight the sequel, a release date is still unknown.
