J.K. Rowling Promises Next Book 'for the Kids' as 'Casual Vacancy' Sales Soar
Author J.K. Rowling's latest book "The Casual Vacancy" is enjoying continued success after its release on Sept. 27, but Rowling has promised her audience that her next book "will be for children."
During a speech at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Rowling revealed that she had "a number of ideas on my laptop" that includes a book for "younger children than the 'Harry Potter' series."
"The Casual Vacancy," Rowling's first official book for adults, was eagerly anticipated and remains on both The New York Times' and USA Today's bestseller lists. It's a tribute to the author's outstanding success with the "Harry Potter" series that her first adult-only book has been such a smash.
The series originally intended for youths was also picked up and read by adults and turned a simple storyline into one of the most-popular and profitable series of all time. Fans wanted something new from Rowling, and she certainly delivered with "Casual Vacancy."
Yet with all of its success, Rowling appears to be eager to return to her roots and once again deliver for the younger generation.
"I think probably the next thing I write, or the next thing I publish, will be for children," she explained during her speech.
Of course, "Vacancy" is not without its own adult-themed controversy. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has come out against the novel for its portrayal of one female character who happens to be Sikh.
"Even if the author had chosen to describe the female Sikh character's physical traits, there was no need for her to use provocative language, questioning her gender. This is condemnable," Avtar Singh Makkar, head of the SGPC told the Indian Express.
For her part, Rowling told the Press Trust of India that she did a "vast amount of research" on Sikhism and had personal ties to the community.
"The Casual Vacancy" is available now.
