James Gunn News: Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Director Believes Superman Can Beat the Hulk
"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn left Marvel fans in dismay after saying in a Facebook Live chat with the fans that Superman would defeat the Hulk should they be featured in a clash.
Gunn's statement was a response to a question raised by a fan and was reflective of his comic book fondness. While it was apparent that Gunn was not biased with his answer despite being associated with Marvel, his answer only echoes what the comic book fandom thought in the past.
Back in 1996, Marvel and DC joined forces in publishing a limited comic book crossover that featured the heroes from both comic book publishers in a battle, including Superman and Hulk. In a primary battle involving Superman and the Hulk, Superman won as determined by the votes of the readers.
However, the Man of Steel also has the upper hand as compared to the Jade monster in terms of box-office performance. "Hulk," which was shown in 2003, only made $245,360,480 worldwide whereas "Superman Returns," which was shown in 2006, made $391,081,192 as its global gross.
The last solo film of Hulk, which was shown in 2008 and was titled "The Incredible Hulk," also failed to topple the "Man of Steel," which was shown in 2013, as the former only earned $263,427,551 worldwide while the latter raked in $668,045,518 globally.
While fans will never be settled as to who will win between the two superheroes incarnated by rival publishing houses following Gunn's statement, one thing is certain: the "Guardians of the Galaxy" director has always considered "Watchmen" as his favorite comic book series while DC's Joker is his favorite super villain.
Meanwhile, in the same Facebook Live Q&A, Gunn also expressed his desire to work on the villain characters of Fantastic Four, which, unfortunately, Fox still has rights to.
"I probably wouldn't add Ben Grimm to the Guardians team even if they were a part of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). And of course I would love the FF (Fantastic Four) to be a part of the MCU...Fox owns so many great villains and cosmic characters I would love to play around with including Annihilus -- and I think they own Kang," he said.
