Jason Day News: World No. 2 Wins Over Thongchai Jaidee Despite Prior Injury
Jason Day decided to carry on his quest for another possible championship tucked under his belt as he took on Thongchai Jaidee on Thursday at the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play Championship at Austin Country Club despite the injury he initially sustained after hurting his back during his drive on 15 on the first day of the tournament. Furthermore, Day did not only go on playing amidst his injury; he conquered the game.
Day, golf's World No. 2, defeated Graeme McDowell on the 16th hole in Wednesday's opening round, ending the game with a 3-2 score. Briefly after shaking hands with Graeme McDowell, Day left the venue and was seen bending over and kneeling to relieve the pain he was suffering from.
Day's golf career has been marred by several injuries, such as wrist and ankle injuries, not to mention his vertigo. The latest injury he sustained left golf fans wondering about his fate at the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play Championship, with many worrying that he could not continue his quest.
However, his agent, Bud Martin released a statement to the media saying that the golfer was prepping up for his next game and would definitely play against Jaidee.
True enough, Day didn't just show up in his match with Jaidee; he conquered it, too with his 5-3 victory.
Speaking to ABC news after his win over Jaidee, Day explained what really transpired during his game the previous day.
"It's a disc (issue)…when it gets inflamed the facet joints lock up, and then everything kind of goes into spasm and I can't really move and it's really difficult to play golf… the biggest hurdle for me was to get through the warm up without going, should I push it or should I not… once I got out on the golf course and was focusing on hitting the right shots then I forgot about it, which was good," he said.
Day revealed that the injury the previous day really got him disappointed as he has been doing the things that he ought to do to keep his game condition in shape, and strictly adhering to the hourly recovery protocol.
"These things just pop out of the blue and you can't do anything about it. It's so frustrating because I am playing really good golf right now. I know that if I can keep playing this way, I can win," he said.
