Jennifer Garner News: Actress Encourages People to Help Young Victims of Calamities to Overcome Trauma
Jennifer Garner encourages others to do their share in helping children who have been victims of calamities.
It has been more than two months since Hurricane Harvey ravaged a big part of Texas and killed at least 82 people, but Garner believes that there is still so much to do. While other organizations and volunteers may focus on rebuilding damaged properties of the victims, the actress wants her fans and supporters to work on rehabilitating the spirit of the children through the Save the Children foundation's Journey of Hope program, to which she is an ambassador.
"One boy told me how his mom had put the kids in a kiddie pool in chest-high waters, and she had gone under because she couldn't swim. He'd said, 'Throw Mama a rope!' and saved her. Instead of saying, 'We lost our house, all my toys are gone,' he wanted me to know that his mom was okay. That spirit makes you really appreciate the good in the world," Garner told People magazine recently as she recalled one encounter with a child whose family was affected by the catastrophe.
Garner has witnessed how Save the Children's Journey of Hope program has helped numerous children, especially in dealing with their trauma due to the massive flooding caused of Hurricane Harvey. While the extent of the trauma may vary from one child to another, depending on what may have caused it, Garner attests that helping them talk about it does wonders.
"It may sound like a small thing, but I've watched it in action. Seeing those kids talk about their feelings in a way that they would never have was the highlight of the year for me," Garner said.
As Garner believes that the Journey of Hope program works, she encourages other people to support the program based on their own preference. Whether the help may come in the form of holding a book drive or donating diapers, Garner assures that it will restore a person and his faith in humanity at the same time.
