Jeremy Lin on Fortune Cookie Ad by MSG, Racist?

Only a few days removed from the unfortunate comments by champion boxer Floyd Mayweather regarding the hype surrounding the New York Knicks "Lin-sation" Jeremy Lin, Madison Square Garden aired a questionable ad praising the young phenom.

During the broadcast Wednesday night of the Knicks blowout win over visiting Sacramento, 100-85, the MSG network exercised poor judgment when a graphic showing the head of Lin smiling over an open fortune cookie read, "The Knicks Good Fortune."

With New York City and the greater NBA following what has transpired over the last two weeks it is a special time to watch and be a part of something that is rare in the sports world.

But when MSG aired that clip showing Lin above a fortune cookie some say it took away from the quality of enthusiasm surrounding "Lin-sanity" and furthered a conversation about race and not skill.

Mayweather, the flamboyant and outspoken boxer stated on his Twitter account on Monday that the only reason Lin is getting all this attention is not for his outstanding play, but for the sole reason that he is Asian.

"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise," Mayweather wrote.

But his own followers quickly voiced their disapproval to which Mayweather responded.

"Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized," Mayweather added.

"I'm speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up," he added.

While people are getting caught up in the whirlwind that is "Lin-mania" both skeptics and supporters agree that respect coupled with gratitude ought to be expressed and that everyone should follow his example of humility and be thankful they can watch a "Lin-egend" in the making.
